Good morning all. Just opened up the coffee counter, very bleary eyed this morning . yesterday i never stopped. Anyways, i hope everyone is well this morning and feeling full of the joys of spring! As Geoff has already started sharing his garden with us, wouldnt it be a good idea if you are getting your garden ready as well , posting in a wee photo just to let as all see. I will do when i have all my planting etc done. Every garden comes in all shapes and sizes and i dont reckon there are two the same. So it should be interesting.
Counter all cleaned up now, ( must leave a note to the night crew to tidy up after themselves) Pull up your chairs and join us for cooffee, tea, latte and hot chocolate this morning . Also im serving , (not to everyones taste) MANX KIPPERS (filleted of course). open all windows after grilling. Hope people will give them a try, yummy very tasty. I get them delivered every year.
Congratulations to Dee Langevin on POTD well done....

Yesterday I commented on hi-key images in the Gallery and today we have a predominantly lo-key image in Dee's POTD. Note how the man’s body stands perfectly on the horizontal Thirds. Even in the darkest areas you can still see the outline of his robes.
I think I'm getting old... The candles cost more than my birthday cake.

Ohh a pair of kippers & a poached egg on top with lashings of tea will do me fine Karen. I remember as a kid having bread & Beef dripping (Dripping was the the residue in the roasting dish after a joint had been roasted and had set) yes times were hard & rationing was still on with Marmite in a local Cafe/tearooms it tasted lovely, they did kippers too. Great potd portrait by Dee today. Thunder & Lightening up here in Cheshire it's driving the two dogs nuts!!!! Wayne

Sorry - my visits here are a touch sporadic at the moment Dee Langevin's POTD image is top class! really excellent exposure and balance of colour etc, and it's so nicely composed. Talking of gardens earlier - I was sorry to see, in half a day, ALL the petals blew off from our new Magnolia - just in time for Ruth's return home - just as well I had taken some photos! Jak & I had a great time in the Sax shop (carefull!!) yesterday - it was amazing!! I have never seen so many different Saxophones in one place - I did take some photos, though they aren't all that great, I might post the odd one later once they are archived onto the PC. We chose one and also selected a mouthpeice to complement it (sound wise). Meanwhile, I have nearly 200 photos from Ruth & Rachel to trawl through - I will let Rachel edit hers though...

Geoff the gardner............I need some help. I bought chinese lanterns in a box (Franchetti). i dont understand what to do with them. When i opened the box there seems to be more soil than anything and one strand. ment to be 5 in it. it says. fill a hole with a mixture of soil and compost ensuring the crown is at soil level, how do i know what the crown is.

Do people still eat tripe and how on earth can they. It looks disgusting. I know my mum loved it, but i just cant see what there is to like. (iv never tasted it, but also dont think i could put it near my mouth)
But if you've not tasted it then you can't be expected to understand why some people love it. Tripe is still available from butchers but has such a limited customer base it is often something you need to ask to be bought in. Since all animals have stomach lining, tripe is a biproduct of the meat process that mainly gets sent for pet food production. But it is an acquired taste (just like marmite) which some people love. If you are put off by the look of it then it is understandable. If we all went by looks then there would be no blue cheese in the shops.

If I may be so bold as to step in?! I love Chinese lanterns, if there are supposed to be 5 in the box then i would carefully check through the soil to see if there are any sight of any more crowns in there. The crown is the bit where the stems start to exit from the rootball. If there aren't 5 take it back and complain.

I need to ask this question after Waymol talking about dripping etc.Do people still eat tripe and how on earth can they. It looks disgusting. I know my mum loved it, but i just cant see what there is to like. (iv never tasted it, but also dont think i could put it near my mouth) When I was a chef, I had the misfortune to have to cook tripe regularly, and of course I had to taste it to make sure it was ok to serve to customers... my colleague and I used to fight to see who would be the loser and taste it!

Eeeuuukk! All this talk of tripe reminds me of what my brother feeds to his dog. The unwashed stuff!! If you've only ever seen the "nice" clean white tripe, just wait till you get a noseful of the brown stuff. Disgusting!!!
Might taste nice with a bit of on it though.

I haven't tasted tripe either; nevertheless, I would still consider it. Many years ago, I watched a television show in which one of the earthy characters described raw oysters as looking like "something that fell out of an ox's nose." I cannot verify the accuracy of this description, having spent insufficient time around cattle, but the description might be reasonably close. Others, even those who eat oysters and like the taste, have also described their appearance as disgusting. I do not make a habit of eating raw oysters, but have occasionally done so. Although I was not especially put off by the oysters' appearance, I can nevertheless see how others might. I am talking about real oysters from the sea, not "mountain oysters" that aren't really oysters at all but a byproduct from producing oxen. I haven't tried those yet.

I've never tried tripe...though they sell it at a large discount grocery store here...have no intentions of trying it either. I try to avoid cold slimy foods so don't want to try oysters. I've had cow tongue, but back when I was about 10 and was being polite. We had a very old British man (at the time he was about 90-92...he lived to be 99) at our church who brought boiled cow tongue to potluck. He was one of my best friends at the church, a darling sweet man. I was in line behind him for food and he was very proud of the tongue. Ugh...I think all he'd done was salt the water. It was worse than liverworst because you were sure it was tasting you back! Umm...one food I won't eat is geoduck (pronounced gooey duck) if only for its unfortunate appearance. I get all embarrassed at the thought.
