The Judges of the Cafe Choice Award are pleased to announce the presentation of this highly rated award:

is awarded to member

LES F

for his image

"The Engine Shed"

From the Judges:

"Our tenth Cafe Choice Award goes to Les F for his "Engine Shed".  With it’s pure monochrome and wonderful handling of the smoky lighting, the judges felt that this was a very well handled shot with no distracting blown highlights and loads of detail in the darker areas.

Some of us wondered if there is a special sort of light that you only get in engine sheds. This has bags of atmosphere and a gritty feel to it. One of the best black and white conversions we have seen for a long time.

Congratulations Les!" from the Judges.

This was a picture that really grabbed my attention when it came to the Gallery. Such a sense of atmosphere I could almost smell the grease and coal smoke.

I really like this picture.  It truly makes you feel like you are in the past.  Well done, I'm glad you didn't try go for sepia with this, that would just have made it look as if you were trying too hard to make it look old.  This way, it simply looks old but also cleaner.  Sepia generally looks face IMHO so this picture shows its quality better.

A big thank you to the judges and everybody who has commented. I am really pleased with the "Cafe Award" means a lot, this was a challenging shot in the first place and even before taking it I new it had to be in mono. The smoke from the engine helped diffuse the lights a little just enough, even more important to me is I have spent the last few months try to improve my mono images so for the judges to comment on the conversion is the icing on the cake for me.
