First African American In SpaceU.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Guion S. Bluford becomes the first African American to travel into space when the space shuttle Challenger lifts off on its third mission. It was the first night launch of a space shuttle, and many people stayed up late to watch the spacecraft roar up from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 2:32 a.m. The Challenger spent six days in space, during which time Bluford and his four fellow crew members launched a communications satellite for the government of India, made contact with an errant communications satellite, conducted scientific experiments, and tested the shuttle's robotic arm. Just before dawn on September 5, the shuttle landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California, bringing an end to the most flawless shuttle mission to that date.
Beatles Auction On this day in 1984, an auction of Beatles memorabilia raises some $270,000. Auction items included Ringo Starr's snare drum, which sold for more than $1,000, and an unpublished book by John Lennon, which sold for more than $20,000.

Medical QueryA little old woman called the hospital.
She said, "Hello, darling, I'd like to talk with the person who gives the information regarding your patients. But, I don't want to know if the patient is getting better, or doing like expected, or worse. I want to know all the information from top to bottom, from A to Z!"
The voice on the other end of the line said, "That's a very unusual request....What is the patient's name and room number?"
She said, "Yes, darling! I'd like to know the information about Gail Davenport, in Room 302."
The information operator responded, "Davenport, Davenport. Let me see. Oh, yes, Mrs. Davenport is doing very well. In fact, she's had two full meals. Her blood pressure is fine. Her blood work just came back as normal. She's going to be taken off the heart monitor in a couple of hours and if she continues this improvement, her doctor is going to send her home Tuesday."
The woman said, "Thank Goodness! That's wonderful! Oh, thank goodness! Her test came back normal, she's getting off the heart machine in a couple of hours you say. Oh! That's fantastic, darling! And she is being released tomorrow! I'm so happy to hear that! That's wonderful news!"
The man on the phone said, "From your enthusiasm, I take it you must be a close family member or a very close friend!"
She said, "What close family or friend? I'm Gail Davenport in 302! My doctor never tells me anything."
