Looks like a really impressive place to visit in person but a really challenging one to do justice to photographically.  You were apparently struggling to get everything you wanted into a single shot even though you were using a 16 mm lens with your APS-C sized imager.  A rectilinear wide angle shot can't really get everything you want into the shot and a fisheye would warp the classic architecture out of shape.  Not sure if you know how to shoot a bubble panorama and stitch it together or whether you could have gotten permission to do it, but this looks like a good place to shoot a couple of them.

Bubble Panorama .. no not come across that  Scoundrel

Hampton Court Palace is a fantastic place to visit and maybe even better if i wasn't -5 with a killer wind  and trying to snow .. There are a lot of empty bare rooms which seem a pity .. The chapel ( No photography ) is to be seen
