Coming soon - a new mini challenge for you!

Black and White Challenge

There is something magical about the classic simplicity of the black and white image. Without colour to give life, a photographer needs to think about things like texture and contrast to give an image impact.

In the days when monochrome film was the only medium, photographers like the legendary Ansel Adams and Henri Cartier Bresson spent a great deal of time in the darkroom to achieve the excellent images that still stand up today. In modern times with so many choices, the photographers who produce the best black & white images may have developed a mindset that enables them to ‘see’ the world in black and white. If we practice and analyze our images to see which work best in mono we can probably all improve our skills.

Anyone can do black & white, it's not the preserve of photojournalists and art photographers, it's just a question of finding a suitable subject and having a go. You probably have a ‘black & white’ setting on your camera if you don’t want to do the mono conversion yourself. Any image editor will enable good mono conversions and programs like Nik Silver Efex or Lightroom have a great choice of presets to give dynamism to images.

Whether you're an old hand or not done black and white before, I hope you'll give it some thought. We'll be publishing details of this challenge soon!

And not only do many of today's cameras have straight-out-of-camera black-and-white, but they also have simulations of popular filtration used with black-and-white - red, orange, yellow, and green.

Coming soon - a new challenge for you!

Wide Angle Challenge

Wide angle photography isn’t easily defined but let’s keep it simple so everyone can join in. Just attach a wide angle lens to your DSLR or set your zoom to its widest focal length. If you’re using a bridge camera or compact camera set it to its widest setting and this will usually be 28mm or less. The wider you can go the more interesting your shots are likely to be so ultra wide or fisheye lenses will be ideal.

With wide angle lenses, you literally are getting the bigger picture. Objects usually look farther away and so one of the challenges is to ensure there is something to interest the viewer in the foreground. Wide angle lenses create distortion. This can be bad if you don’t want it but great if you do! They’ll also bring in overhead branches, the sun (and lens flare).

This challenge is completely open to your choice of subject but the main thing is please take new shots for the challenge rather than delving into your archives. Images taken over the last four weeks are acceptable if time or other pressures prevent you taking new ones.

Remember, this is a fun project! We'll be announcing it soon.

I was sent this “joke” but I don’t get it. Have I missed the joke or is the joke on me?
Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.

This is from the artificial intelligence community of an example of an English sentence with perfectly good syntax but whose semantics are inconsistent, hence a total disaster from which extracting any meaning that will hold water is pretty much impossible.  In the middle 1980s, someone published a book written entirely by a computer.  Needless to say, it wasn't very good or even had much meaning.  I had already run across this sentence several years before that and don't know why this particular sentence would be in put in the context of a joke either.

That said, Mark Twain has beaten the author of "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously" to the syntactically correct-but-semantically-meaningless contest by several decades.  His short story "A Double-Barrelled Detective Story" contains within it the following paragraph:

It was a crisp and spicy morning in early October.  The lilacs and laburnums, lit with the glory-fires of autumn, hung burning and flashing in the upper air, a fairy bridge produced by kind Nature for the wingless child things that have their homes in the tree-tops and would visit together; the larch and the pomegranate flung their purple and yellow flames in brilliant and broad flashes along the slanting sweep of the woodland; the sensuous fragrance of innumerable deciduous flowers rose upon the swooning atmosphere; far in the sky a solitary esophagus slept upon motionless wing; everywhere brooded stillness, serenity, and the peace of God.

If you happen to know what an esophagus is, you will find the reference to one in the quoted passage odd indeed!

I was sent this “joke” but I don’t get it. Have I missed the joke or is the joke on me?
Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.

Google tells me that:
It's a sentence composed by Noam Chomsky in his 1957 Syntactic Structures as an example of a sentence that is grammatically correct, but semantically nonsensical. The term was originally used in his 1955 thesis "Logical Structures of Linguistic Theory" and in his 1956 paper "Three Models for the Description of Language". Although the sentence is grammatically correct, no obvious understandable meaning can be derived from it, and thus it demonstrates the distinction between syntax and semantics.

This has been a long day - literally.  Every couple of years, a committee of astronomers makes the decision to lengthen a day by one second to match civil time more closely with astronomical time.  This happens on June 30 or December 30.  Today happened to be one of those days.  There are provisions for shortening a day instead, but so far that has never been necessary.

My version is "Endeavor to eschew grandiloquent verbosity."

And I once heard that Russia - or what was then the Soviet Union anyway - had so much titanium that it wasn't considered especially valuable. The metal made durable shovels for digging ditches.

What a night!
The local power supply went off at 3am and the neighbour’s burglar alarm woke me. Fifteen minutes later the power came back on. Then it happened again at 5am when I had got back to sleep. Two more power cuts and I am now beyond sleep.
