Coming soon - a new mini challenge for you!

Black and White Challenge

There is something magical about the classic simplicity of the black and white image. Without colour to give life, a photographer needs to think about things like texture and contrast to give an image impact.

In the days when monochrome film was the only medium, photographers like the legendary Ansel Adams and Henri Cartier Bresson spent a great deal of time in the darkroom to achieve the excellent images that still stand up today. In modern times with so many choices, the photographers who produce the best black & white images may have developed a mindset that enables them to ‘see’ the world in black and white. If we practice and analyze our images to see which work best in mono we can probably all improve our skills.

Anyone can do black & white, it's not the preserve of photojournalists and art photographers, it's just a question of finding a suitable subject and having a go. You probably have a ‘black & white’ setting on your camera if you don’t want to do the mono conversion yourself. Any image editor will enable good mono conversions and programs like Nik Silver Efex or Lightroom have a great choice of presets to give dynamism to images.

Whether you're an old hand or not done black and white before, I hope you'll give it some thought. We'll be publishing details of this challenge soon!

And not only do many of today's cameras have straight-out-of-camera black-and-white, but they also have simulations of popular filtration used with black-and-white - red, orange, yellow, and green.

That one sounds a little like, "If your parents didn't have any children, chances are you won't either."
