PHOTO OF THE MONTH
JUNE 2012

The Blacksmith
by Dee Langevin
Thumb Up

From Dee Langevin

"I took this photo at Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River between Delaware and New Jersey.   The fort was used as a prison to hold captured southern soldiers during the US Civil War.  It has been restored and offers reenactments to tell the story of the people who lived at the fort.  This gentleman was portraying a blacksmith and I captured the image during his demonstration (it was not posed).  He was very animated and the blacksmith shop was in a dark recess of the building, so it was a challenge to get a sharp photo under low light conditions without using a flash.  (Canon EOS 60D with Sigma 18-200mm OS lens,  ISO 1000, f6.3, f1/8)".

CONGRATULATIONS Dee Langevin!

I just returned from some travel and was delighted to find this image on the front page as POTM!  I very much appreciate the honor!  Thank you all for your very gracious comments and congratulations and for your votes as well.  I don't often shoot portraits and am trying to expand my horizons.  This image wasn't formally posed, but taken during a reenactment and blacksmithing demonstration.  The wonderful character in this man's face really captured my attention.  Glad you liked it as well!    Dee   Wink

Very impressive photo, you not only captured an innocent expression but the textures of skin, hair, the fabrics of his clothing and hat... everything about it reeks of professionalism.  My compliments.   Thumb Up  I think subdued lighting, while more difficult, helps create more interesting detail.   Congratulations!  Shirley/Tisie
