Today In History

May 13, 1972: Fire breaks out at club in Japan

On this day in 1972, a fire breaks out at the Playtown Cabaret in Osaka, Japan, that kills 118 people. Only 48 people at the trendy nightclub survived the horrific blaze because safety equipment was faulty and safety procedures were not followed.

The top floor of Osaka's Sennichi department store was the home of the hip, if slightly seedy, Playtown Cabaret. A favorite of the city's young people, a large crowd was there on May 13 while an electrician toiled in the department store, three floors below. Inadvertently, the worker set off a fire that reached some oil-soaked rags in a nearby storage room.

The fire quickly spread, climbing both the elevator shafts and the outside walls of the building. The only remaining means of egress for the young people upstairs were the fire exits and emergency chute. The fire exits were hidden by drapes and almost no one in the club found them. Twenty people did locate the emergency chute, but it collapsed as they made their way to the ground and all of them were killed.

Other people sought to escape the smoke and flames by jumping to the roof of a nearby building, but it was too far and all who tried were killed.

Today's Trivia

Anna M. Jarvis and Mother's Day

In 1907, Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948), a Philadelphia schoolteacher, began a movement to set up a national Mother's Day in honor of her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis. She solicited the help of hundreds of legislators and prominent businessmen to create a special day to honor mothers. The first Mother's Day observance was a church service honoring Anna's mother. Anna handed out her mother's favorite flowers, the white incarnations, on the occasion as they represent sweetness, purity, and patience. Anna's hard work finally paid off in the year 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a national holiday in honor of mothers.

Earliest Mother's Day Celebration

The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring
celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.

"This image was captured at Busch Wildlife Area in St. Charles, MO on an early morning in March of this year. In order to capture some of the foreground detail, I utilized HDR. I exposed at normal and +/- 1 2/3 stops. I post processed in Photomatix to get as close to what my eye saw that morning.

The Judges of the Cafe Choice Award are pleased to announce the presentation of this highly rated award:

is awarded to member

TINA

for her image

"White on White"

From the Judges:

"Tina’s shot of a cat waiting to come in is very simple in appearance at first glance. Look closer and you’ll notice how the quality of the exposure which gives us so much detail in the white tones, is amazing. The faint reflection of the cat in the glass gives the image some depth and there’s a wealth of detail in the fur, the window blind and the masonry.

We have a perfect high key image with the blacks in the cat’s eyes and the framing of the window providing the contrast.

The judges, although not unanimous in their love for cats are unanimous that this is a top quality image and should be awarded Photography Café’s highest award.

Congratulations Tina!"

Nature often provides the birds with some amazing, many-coloured plumage and other times it’s just one colour as in the POTD. Dee caught a shot when the light made most of that colour. A fast speed caught the droplets of water sparkling in the sunshine. Note how the duck is set off-centre and facing into the middle.

Today I’m starting a whole series of
Blonde Jokes
There was a typical blonde named Suzy. She had long blonde hair, blue eyes and she was totally sick of all the blonde jokes; so one day she decided to get a make-over. She cut and dyed her hair and dyed her eyelashes. And to complete the feel good factor she went out and bought a brand new convertible. The next day she went driving down a country road and came across a herd of sheep. She stopped and called the shepherd over. "Hey, That's a real nice flock of sheep," she said. "Well, thank you, miss" said the herder. "I have a proposition for you," said Suzy. "If I can guess the exact number of sheep in your flock, can I take one home?" "Why, Sure," said the herder, convinced no one could guess exactly. So Suzy sat up and looked at the herd for a few seconds, then replied, "178". "Wow!" said the herder. "Incredible. That's exactly right. Go ahead and pick out any sheep you want to take home." So Suzy went and picked one out and put it in her car. The herder leaned over the convertible and said, "Okay, now I have a proposition for you." "What is it?" queried Suzy. "Well," said the herder, "If I can guess the real colour of your hair, can I have my dog back?"

I do hope that there aren’t any genuine blondes who are offended by these jokes. It’s all a myth for the comedy writers.

I can remember a photo of a dog on a winding road through a wood that made POTW five years ago. Maybe camy’s image will go on to the same success as cybershot’s winner. The spotlight of sun puts an air of mystery to the rest of the wood and gets us surmising about where the path is leading.

More from the series of Blonde Jokes
Two blondes are walking along the street when they see a mirror lying in the street. The first one picks it up and looks in it.
"That face looks familiar", she says
The second one grabs the mirror and looks at it.
"Of course you do, you idiot, its me!"

Dee used fast speed to freeze the droplets at just the right moment to describe the activity in water movement. Amusingly, the other duck looks startled by all this action.

Three blondes walked into this bar and one said, "Beer all around"!
And so they toasted "Here's to 51 days"!
So the bartender asks, "Hey, what are you guys celebrating?"
To which one replied, "Well, the puzzle box said 2-3 years, and we finished it in 51 days!

The wren is such a difficult bird to photograph. For a start it is very small so very difficult to spot and get close enough. But it is a nervous bird and generally flits within the bushes, never staying still for long. Chocky places the wren nicely on the horizontal Thirds, facing into centre, to make a nice composition.

Ross shows great control over focus in the POTD with sharpness the full length of the back petal to delicate anthers on the stamen. Yet, nicely, the focus drops off at the near petal to give depth to the image. But the winning feature has to be the dramatic side lighting which picks out all the folds and pulls your eye on to the colour.

It’s the simple composition that makes that image a POTD winner for Sainty. The wide format enhances the sense that the horse is in a lonely spot.

The singularity of colour is a strong feature of rooster’s POTD. The red/brown dominance of the subject is echoed in the background which is nicely out of focus. In both cases, a touch of green saves it from being too red. Good lighting and sharp detail set the subject out in a way that makes it almost three-dimensional. But – hey – it’s the cuteness of the squirrel that makes the big bonus.

Blonde Jokes
A blonde and a brunet were walking down the street, and the brunet says, "Oh, look at that poor dead bird".
The blonde looks up, "Where"?!?
