A colleague is considering buying this camera, but would like to know if there is anything cheaper which will do the same job.  She intends to use it for family portraits initially, but may move on to more general photography, and is not particularly concerned with adding lenses at this stage.  Any thoughts?

This could be the best camera available for someone who is about to dive in the deep end of digital photography because of its Guide Mode facility. It takes the user through the camera settings required to handle the shot. Gradually, as the person learns from the camera, she can take over the controls and use the full manual control.

I agree with AL, I looked into this as a carry around instead of my D90.
However my old D40(used for IR) will have to do this job.
The 3100 like the D40 is fine instrument --- tell them to Go for It!

Is this camera like the D40 then in so much as it does not have a focusing motor So you can only use certain lens with it  Thumb Up

Most popular modern lenses for Nikons have a motor built in so this is not really a problem, Steve.
