COFFEE COUNTER
for week of
October 9th

Today In History

Oct 9, 1967, Che Guevara is executed

On this day in 1967, socialist revolutionary and guerilla leader Che Guevara, age 39, is killed by the Bolivian army. The U.S.-military-backed Bolivian forces captured Guevara on October 8 while battling his band of guerillas in Bolivia and assassinated him the following day. His hands were cut off as proof of death and his body was buried in an unmarked grave. In 1997, Guevara's remains were found and sent back to Cuba, where they were reburied in a ceremony attended by President Fidel Castro and thousands of Cubans.

Ernesto Rafael Guevara de la Serna was born to a well-off family in Argentina in 1928. While studying medicine at the University of Buenos Aires, he took time off to travel around South America on a motorcycle; during this time, he witnessed the poverty and oppression of the lower classes. He received a medical degree in 1953 and continued his travels around Latin America, becoming involved with left-wing organizations. In the mid 1950s, Guevara met up with Fidel Castro and his group of exiled revolutionaries in Mexico. Guevara played a key role in Castro's seizure of power from Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959 and later served as Castro's right-hand man and minister of industry. Guevara strongly opposed U.S. domination in Latin America and advocated peasant-based revolutions to combat social injustice in Third World countries. Castro later described him as "an artist of revolutionary warfare."

Guevara resigned—some say he was dismissed—from his Cuban government post in April 1965, possibly over differences with Castro about the nation’s economic and foreign policies. Guevara then disappeared from Cuba, traveled to Africa and eventually resurfaced in Bolivia, where he was killed. Following his death, Guevara achieved hero status among people around the world as a symbol of anti-imperialism and revolution. A 1960 photo taken by Alberto Korda of Guevara in a beret became iconic and has since appeared on countless posters and T-shirts. However, not everyone considers Guevara a hero: He is accused, among other things, of ordering the deaths of hundreds of people in Cuban prisons during the revolution.

Today's Trivia

Where Did People Speak Oscan?

Oscan was an Italian language spoken in much of central and south Italy. It was gradually supplanted by Latin after the absorption the area by Rome in the third century. Oscan is known from inscriptions dating as far back as the 5th century BCE. The most important Oscan inscriptions are the Tabula Bantina and the Cippus Abellanus.

Why Should You Smile In Milan?

In Milan, Italy, there is a law on the books that requires a smile on the face of all citizens at all times. Exemptions include time spent visiting patients in hospitals or attending funerals. Otherwise, the fine is $100 if they are seen in public without a smile on their face.

The Judges of the Cafe Choice Award are pleased to announce the presentation of this highly rated award:

is awarded to member

BRANNY

for his image

"CUDDY'S CRAG"

From the Judges:

"Branny’s image shows us the rugged terrain of Hadrian’s Wall, a bleak landscape and an area seen by many but not in the light of a frosty morning in mid-winter.

The composition provides excellent foreground interest from the frosty grass on those stones and the contours of the wall lead us through the image from the warm sunlight on the wall into the bleakness of the misty fields and valleys in the distance. It's this change from front to back that makes the image special. The presence of two walkers in the middle distance provides the scale we need to comprehend the scene.

Congratulations, Danny!"

An Important Job

There was an important job to be done, and Everybody was sure Somebody would do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done!

VIP Impression

My husband was once employed in the printing division of a large manufacturing firm. One morning, word came from the top that some visiting VIPs would be touring the plant in just a few minutes. All production was immediately shut down as employees scrambled to quickly tidy up the work place.

When the appointed lookout yelled, "Here they come!" fifty fingers that were poised over fifty machine start-up buttons pressed down in unison and blew every fuse in the building.

Good morning cafe people. 5 Days of work then on holiday for a week. I cant wait. We have woken to yet another wet day. Oh the joys.  Angry

Plenty of hot coffee and tea to go around. Help yourself, and we also have freshly baked bread. Remember and put your dishes in the washer before you go.
Have a lovely day folks.

In a simple yet powerful image, David caught enough information to display the subject but had enough empty space to fire our imagination into filling in the black space.

More wacky definitions.

Miser: A person who lives poor so that he can die rich.
Misty: How some golfers create divots.
Mosquito: An insect that makes you like flies more.
Myth: A female moth.

Thanks very much for the POTD.  It's yet another of my shoots from Iceland.  It does not look it, but it was incredibly windy up on the top. It was actually pretty difficult to stand up or walk around.  The views were well worth, putting up with the weather though.

Jane had the advantage of getting an unusual landscape to start with but getting POTD requires more than that. By getting the foreground land at the bottom of the picture she made use of the zigzag line of hills as your eye follows the route from bottom-left to top-right. The subtle use of HDR brought out the differences in the clouds and land on the horizon showing the vast distance involved.

More wacky definitions.

Negligent: Describes a condition in which you absentmindedly answer the door in your nightgown.
Normalize: 20-20 vision.
Oily: The opposite of late.
Opportunist: A person who, when they fall into a river, starts taking a bath.

When night falls the colour is drained from our view. The POTD looks almost like it was taken in sepia and therefore the small elements of colour stand out contrasting the static elements in the background, the moving parts in the middle-ground and the blur of the water display of the foreground. Despite the slow speed needed for such a shot, there is enough splash showing in the water to give it movement.

More wacky definitions.

Paradox: Two physicians.
Parasites: What you see from the top of the Eiffel Tower.
Pharmacist: A helper on the farm.
Polarize: What penguins see with.

The most dramatic skies are usually at either end of the day and it’s nice to get a sunrise for a change (though it’s not possible to tell it from a sunrise.) In RGBont‘s POTD there is the requisite support foreground but, in a nice way, it also provides a strong diagonal line.

More wacky definitions.
