If it were others who tied in first place we'd have had a vote to break the tie but Karen and I are pleased to share the win in this case. Congrats to Willpower, shooters_desire and Davek. Well done all who entered. David

Congrads to Karen & David For there photo and the rest who won as well. Its funny how people see HDr. Sometimes they want the grunge look or painterly effect vs. the more natural effect. This time we have 2 that scored the same one more painterly the other more natural look.. Its all a learning curve but we had some very good images this time all around... Now that the Compitition is finished maybe we can discuss the images portrayed and learn from this before the next Challange. I know when we vote for an image we simply pick them but what would be better if we could comment on the photo we like about it..

Yes, you're right, they are two different ways of doing HDR but also look at Willpower's image - it's not painterly and it's certainly not grunge. Does it have a natural look? Maybe it's an 'enhanced' natural look. A super image, it certainly got one of my votes.

HDR is very much like ; dare I say it ..... Marmite Whoops sorry. There I've said it. But seriously HDR can also pull you in different directions. RockArea's image benefits from the enhancement of details in the rocks and a wonderful structuring of the clouds without hitting you in the face. Karen's on the other hand is a brilliant example of bringing texture to an image that could have been very flat. I know I have similar images of Railway coaches that really do nothing for me, yet with the HDR treatment, these of Karen's really catch the eye. I really enjoy both styles and do not consider one better than the other. The votes also indicate how other people were torn between the two. The only problem I have, is when it gets so bizarre as to be totally unreal. Post processing in HDR can be a bit of a dark art and sometimes over enthusiasm can absolute ruin an image. As far as mine are concerned, I always attempt to keep the image as "natural" as possible with just some slight tweaking of the Photomatix sliders to make it as pleasing on the eye as I can. I also experiment as you can see from some of my other pictures in the competition. But when it comes down to it, there's the old saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". There is plenty of room for all degrees of HDR and there are some very fine examples right here in the Cafe.

my 1st instinct is to keep it very natural but have a point of interest that draw the viewer. Now sometimes i'll punch it, Like the fire truck. Some images have to go extreme like classic cars, Trains, Box cars ect. Karens image is taking the detail up a notch. I would of done the same. If i'm out shooting Landscape 9 times out of 10 its going to ba an HDR photo. I love doing people in hdr if the image permits for it. I love what Rock did and davek's images are always great to see as well. This is starting to be a good exercise for me to. The one image that stood out to me the most was "When i grow up" Great detail" I loove that about HDR. The Portland bill lighthouse was scenic but i would of sharpened it up more in some areas. I have been using Photomatix but am leaning to getting HDR epex pro by NIK. You can do pin point adjustments with it rather then global

I'll be interested to hear how you get on with that if you go that way, s_d, perhaps you'll post your findings on the board.
