Today In History Seven army ammunition trucks explode in Cali, Colombia, killing more than 1,000 people and injuring thousands more on this day in 1956. The cause of the explosions remains a mystery. The previous day, 20 trucks fully loaded with dynamite departed the Colombian city of Buenaventura. The trucks stopped in Cali and then 13 of the trucks headed toward Bogota, Colombia's capital city. The remaining seven were headed to other destinations and were parked in downtown Cali overnight. Just after midnight, all seven trucks suddenly exploded in a quick chain reaction. A nearby rail station was demolished, as was an army barracks. Five hundred soldiers in the barracks lost their lives in an instant. A three-block area of the densely populated city was absolutely razed. Virtually every window within several miles shattered. The trucks themselves were obliterated and a large crater was left in the ground. The heavy bronze doors of St. Paul's Cathedral, more than 10 blocks away, were blown right off the church. The president of Colombia, General Gustavo Pinilla, publicly charged that terrorists were to blame for the disaster, but no evidence was ever found that the explosion was deliberate. more~Quote Of The Day "You cannot depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus." "Branny’s image shows us the rugged terrain of Hadrian’s Wall, a bleak landscape and an area seen by many but not in the light of a frosty morning in mid-winter.
The composition provides excellent foreground interest from the frosty grass on those stones and the contours of the wall lead us through the image from the warm sunlight on the wall into the bleakness of the misty fields and valleys in the distance. It's this change from front to back that makes the image special. The presence of two walkers in the middle distance provides the scale we need to comprehend the scene.

Good morning everyone It's a fairly bright morning here but with a bit of a breeze and lots of high cloud showing some strong winds up there. I traveled across most of the southern counties yesterday from East Kent to my home in South Devon and encountered plenty of weather on the way. It doesn't feel like August but never mind. I'm hoping the end of the month and September will bring some good weather for my next trip, which is up to Scotland. I want to be able to see some of the west coast scenery that was hidden by rain and clouds for a lot of my last trip up there. Congratulations to Karen on PotD, lots of great lines in that composition. I hope you have a good day and I'll catch you later. David

Karen used lots of vertical lines to strengthen the composition of her POTD by getting up close enough that the first post filled the frame without touching the top border. The reflections add to that strength.
It's nigh-on impossible to sell your cuddly toys; everyone wants new for the newborn child. Charity shops refuse to take them. But the hardest task of all is to dump them in the bin.

Good morning all.
It has started off very dull here so here's hoping it changes. I think this morning we will chance sitting out on the patio. So if anyone cares to join me you are very welcome. Plenty of fruit in the bowl and cereals here for you all. Pots of tea and coffee are ready on the stove. I also have as a wee treat pancakes and maple syrup. Enjoy!!

That is the hard bit deciding what to do with them. Normally 90% have some sort of meaning and when you have 3 girls the amount of cuddly toys through the years and i don't just mean child years i also mean adult is phenomenal. OK have a fab day folks I'm working tonight so i don't think i will be on.

In today’s POTD, windsurf has caught the majesty of flight. The curves on the tips of the wings relate the movement and wind.
They say that before you get into a relationship, you should look for red flags. With my girlfriend, it was like watching a military parade in Tiananmen Square.

Good morning everyone.
I think you're right about the patio, Karen, we have a lovely morning here and I'll take my coffee and a pancake and sit out in the sun.
Congratulations to Mike on a super PotD, a great bit of action there! Many happies to our Julie too!
Have a good day whatever you're up to.

We've had a really cool summer here. I went to a pool party Sunday. Here is the pool at 10:30. It was still overcast at about 1 o'clock when I went into the pool. According to the life guard, air temperature was 57 deg; water temperature, 87 deg. It felt more like swimming in warm broth than water. Great going in; not so great coming out, especially considering the breeze that was blowing. The sun was able to break through intermittently about 2:30 or so.

Good morning everyone
It's a nice bright day here in South Devon but there's a bit of a breeze keeping the temperature down.
Well done Julie, a lovely PotD which suits the BW treatment so well. Glad you had a good trip.
Celebrated with lunch out for which I wore my green and black striped socks and my very first pair of Doc Martens! So there you are folks, that's the real reason for the disturbances!
See you later

Julie’s picture has full range of contrast and sharp definition to take us on a journey above the London scene. The people in the Eye’s pod are as much a part of the picture as the famous buildings below.

Shooting into the sun always adds drama to a shot. By keeping the sun behind a big rock, Tina was allowed to keep the tones in the darker shadows as well as those spectacular highlights.
My parents encouraged me to do scientific research until I tried to find out the magnetic properties of dad’s floppy disks.

Hi everyone
A wet day here in South Devon, which is a shame as we have grandparent duties today. Never mind, I'm sure we'll find plenty to do.
Congratulations to Tina on a super PotD and for gokyo in making it to Photo of the Month. From my point of view it's always pleasing to have landscapes performing strongly in the Cafe gallery!
Better get back on duty, I'll see you later

Once again, Tina keeps detail in the shadows despite shooting towards the sun; but this time the sun is low enough in the sky to do this. The resulting slow shutter speed has given the sea a creamy look but there is enough speed to show the wave movement around the rocks.

Good afternoon everyone,
We have a bit of a dull day here with some drizzle this morning and it's looking likely that more will follow. I'm off to a meeting this afternoon about the exhibition the village photo club is intending to hold in the autumn. The venue will be the hospitality suite of the local micro-brewery. Can't be bad!
Another super PotD from Tina, well done girl!

Take a close look at the focus on Dee’s POTD. It is clearly blurred on the near part and is just beginning to drop at the far side. But the main bulk is within the DOF so it pulls attention in to the centre of the plant. With the limited colour range, the pinks stand out.
When push comes to shove, it's really hard to tell the difference between a push and a shove.

When capturing the shine on wet ground, black and white works well because colour would detract from the subtle lights. The sweeping lines in gokyo’s POTD are nicely enhanced by the fact that they cover the entire bottom of the picture. This leads your eye out into the background.
