PHOTO OF THE MONTH JANUARY 2011 Holding On by RockArea From RockArea Thank you very much for voting this image to be Photo of the Month it's a great honour, not only because of the many excellent images that were in the running this month but also because this kind of photography is a new departure for me.
Red-capped Mangabeys are an endangered species in the wild and this little group are very important conservationally. The title 'Holding on refers not just to the interaction between mother and baby but also to their 'at risk' status. At Paignton Zoo they have access to outside space but at this time of the year they're more likely to be found indoors. Their enclosure is very pleasant and they hear the sounds of other animals that they'd be likely to hear in the wild. Sometimes they wander around, seeming very relaxed and at other times they hear an alarm call and huddle together. This is what I captured here.
The afternoon light strongly backlit the monkeys and I was fortunate to be able to avoid reflections as the photo was taken through the glass of the enclosure. I used my Nikon D300 and a Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 lens, a recent acquisition, with which I'm very pleased. Very little processing has been done, just a bit of lightening of shadows and levels and curves adjustment.
Camera settings were: 1/500s -1 Ev, ISO 800. Aperture set at f2.8 and full zoom.
Many thanks for your votes and comments.

Thanks everyone and commiserations to Branny, who just missed out by a squeak! By the way, I've taken out an annual membership for Paignton Zoo which seems a great way to be able to call in regularly for a couple of hours rather than trying to see everything in one go, so you might be seeing some more monkeys (and other animals) from me as time goes on. What I think is most significant is the rush of members eager to vote for the tie-break. The significant lead proved that the winner was by a very fair vote.
Well done.

What stole it for me was the tenderness between the two, and the sublime lighting which made the image reach out to you. You couldn't help but feel something for them, having said that Branny's image was worthy of the tie and on another day would have taken top slot, so not so much commiserations but very well done.
Congrats both for two marvelous images..

Really delighted to see this shot as Photo of the Month and deservedly so. It is not just well composed and exposed, using wonderful available light, it is really touching and reaches out to us as primates. Combined with your text about it, it tells an important story too. Congratulations David.
