Few nights ago i went to the lilly house and shot at night but with all the snow it hardly looked like nite time. There were 4 of us who went out to this special occasion where they were doing Night Ice sculpturing. I brought all my toys with me but the 2 i used the most was the Canon 17-40 f4l & the Nifty Fifty f1.4 Of all my lenses this is my favorite one. Also out of 450 images now some of them produced HDR but i only kept 50 and out of 50 i have 20 rated. Of those 17 were from the nifty 50, the rest were from the 17-40. (3). When i first view my images i go through and stack certain ones for hdr then the rest i look over to see which ones i want to develop so i give them a 1 star rating. Then i delete the rest bringing it down to about 125 images total. That's where i start so out of 450 images 20 were favorites and 17 were from the nifty 50. GO FIGURE  |

I wonder if the disproportionately number of 50 mm shots were the result of the longer focal length or the greater light gathering power. In other words, were a lot of the rejects the result of motion blur or other defects resulting from a slow shutter speed? Or was it mainly a compositional/artistic thing?

scoundrel probably all the above. When i'm tryin to make my mind up which shots to keep and which one to tag i'm looking for the best image. Being at night time i would have to say more light coming through the 50 then the 17-40. I use to have a series of primes but very resently i sold and traded them to get the 17-40 f4l and a new 70-300 vc usm lens from tamron

Delighted that you like the Nifty fifty - now a popular lens.
We oldies used to use this as a kit lens in film days, although the one that came with cameras was usually an f1.8. I don't think that we used to appreciate its capabilities.

The Nifty - Fifty has always been a good standard lens. Most well known manufactures make excellent versions. I have the Nikon f1.8AF, f1.8 series E. Also an AI 55 micro, all very good. When I used Canon film cameras (in my youth LOL) I used the 50mm 1.8. Now with Digital & the conversion factors they are even more useful having the larger f stop. Anothe prime lens I have for the nikon is a Sigma 24mm. Older version, I find this fine for IR work with the R72 screwin filter. More power to the Nifty-Fifty!  |

On a camera with an APS-C sized imager, the Nifty Fifty acts more like a short portrait lens than the general-purpose lens it would be on a film camera or one with a 24x36 mm imager. For that reason, my first lens that I got that opened up bigger than f/2.8 wasn't a Nifty Fifty but a (Sigma) Wort'y Thirty instead. A Nifty Fifty is on my wish list though, specifically the Canon f/1.4 flavor.

i can honestly say i have 2 lenses that are not going anywhere. The nifty 50 & the 17-40f4l. Both i use religiously. the one i'm finding out not much use for is the 70-300 but i havn't been doing that kind of shooting that callls for the lens either. When i do use it i want a real closeup on a far object i'll put on the sigma 1:4 teleconvertor

My version of the (Canon) 17-40 mm f/4L is my Tamron 17-50 mm f/2.8: a stop faster, important to me because I do a lot of low-light shooting and there aren't any zooms for Canon EF or EF-S mount at any price that open up much wider than f/2.8. In fact, all of my zooms open up to f/2.8 throughout their range for that reason. Having zooms like that blunts my appetite for fast primes a bit.

scoundrel when i switched to FFS i lost that lens and i absolutely loved it but it wouldn't work on my 5dmark2. one of the sharpest and best lenses tamron ever made

I have the Sony 50mm 1.4 and whilst I find it superb in low light, I find focal points still an issue.
