COFFEE COUNTER
for week of
November 28th

Today In History

November 28, 1990~ Tearful farewell from Iron Lady

Britain has a new prime minister for the first time in more than 11 years.
Margaret Thatcher formally tendered her resignation to the Queen early this morning after leaving Downing Street for the last time. John Major was elected her successor yesterday by Conservative Party members.
The woman dubbed as the Iron Lady during her premiership made her last tearful speech as the leader of the country from the doorstep of Number 10.
Mrs Thatcher told reporters the country had become a much improved place in which to live since she took office in 1979.
"We're leaving Downing Street for the last time after eleven-and-a-half wonderful years and we're happy to leave the UK in a very much better state than when we came here," she said.
She also gave her support to her successor. "Now it's time for a new chapter to open and I wish John Major all the luck in the world," she said.
After the speech she and her husband, Denis, were driven to Buckingham Palace, watched by a small crowd keen to witness this significant moment.
Mrs Thatcher had a half-hour meeting with the Queen before returning to her private home in Dulwich, south London.
Fifteen minutes later Mr Major arrived at the palace and was formally invited by the Queen to form a new administration.

The premiership of Britain's first female leader - and the longest since 1827 - was at an end.

What Should I Do With This?

"What am I supposed to do with this?" grumbled the motorist as the police clerk handed him a receipt for his traffic violation.

"Keep it," the clerk advises. "When you get four of them, you get a bicycle."

Taco Order

My daughter went to a local fast food taco restaurant and ordered a taco. She asked the person behind the counter for "minimal lettuce." He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg.

Business Deal

Fresh out of business school, the young man answered a want ad for an accountant. He was being interviewed by a very nervous man who ran a three-man business.

"I need someone with an accounting degree," the man said. "But mainly, I'm looking for someone to do my worrying for me."

"Excuse me?" the young accountant said.

"I worry about a lot of things," the man said. "But I don't want to have to worry about money. Your job will be to take all the money worries off my back."

"I see," the young accountant said. "And how much does the job pay?"

"I will start you at eighty-five thousand dollars"

"Eighty-five thousand dollars!" the young man exclaimed. "How can such a small business afford a sum like that?"

"That," the owner said, "is your first worry."

By keeping the colours to the green and brown range, Maybee's POTD accents the way nature turns its colours in unison. With the bridge being the only other subject, its hard surface contrasts with the nature that surrounds it.

Cuteness and humour is a winning combination. But it would've been far less if it wasn't for the clean background. That's the magic touch.

Thanks for your appreciation everyone! This was a learning experience for me both in the shooting and the post processing, to achieve the effect that I wanted with just one flashgun and a reflector in a home environment.

Delightful image. Wonderful contrast beween the softness of the blanket & baby and the popping colours in the stripes, blocks & frame.

Branny's POTD is one that captures an atmosphere. With the various sources of light and the different smoke columns, it portrays the working environment.
