Today In History
Apollo 12, the second manned mission to the surface of the moon, is launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, with astronauts Charles Conrad, Jr.; Richard F. Gordon, Jr.; and Alan L. Bean aboard. President Richard Nixon viewed the liftoff from Pad A at Cape Canaveral. He was the first president to attend the liftoff of a manned space flight. On 19th November, the landing module Intrepid made a precision landing on the northwest rim of the moon’s Ocean of Storms. About five hours later, astronauts Conrad and Bean became the third and fourth humans to walk on the surface of the moon. During the next 32 hours, the two astronauts made two lunar walks, where they collected lunar samples and investigated the Surveyor 3 spacecraft, an unmanned U.S. probe that soft-landed on the moon in 1967. "Les’s image was taken in evening sunlight at Curbar Edge in the Peak District. One climber sits on the pinnacle while the second makes his way up.
This is a picture that sums up the battle of man against the elements and the isolated climber and the space around him show that off to good effect. The countryside beyond is lit up by that evening sun which also rim lights the bare-chested climber.
It is an unusual image. You may see shots of the countryside from elevated viewpoints, you may see shots of climbers perched atop rocky crags but to get them both in one shot makes it special.

If you are ever in the Tanfield area I would recommend a visit to the railway station and repair yards for a photo-shoot. It will be particularly good if you get atmospheric conditions as in branny’s POTD. If the forge is operating in the morning you get good side lighting through the windows that cuts the smoke and steam. But, if you are really lucky, you could get a shot of a trial steam-up outside. Note how the backlighting has given an isolating rim of white to the engines and the young lad as well as adding depth to the smoke.
A farmer was having a hard time filling out a railway claim sheet for a cow that had been scooped up by the cow-catcher on a steam locomotive and had expired in the process.The puzzled man came down to the last item: Disposition of the carcass. After wrinkling his forehead and screwing up his eyes a few moments, he wrote, "Kind and gentle."

Some pictures call out for symmetry. With Pipeman's POTD, the square-on close crop had to be central. The offset part of the image is in the vertical, with the eyes and nose covering the lower half. Excellent detail and shine on the coat make a subject that you feel you can touch and those soulfull eyes make dog-lovers melt.
A little boy went to a grocery store and asked the clerk for a box of Duz detergent.
The clerk said, "Son, what do you need detergent for?" The little boy said, "I want to wash my dog." The clerk said, "Well, son, that Duz detergent is pretty strong for washing a little dog."
The little boy said, "That's what I want." The clerk said, "Alright," and he sold him the duz and he said, "Now, you be careful when you wash you dog. That detergent is very strong; it might kill him."
The little boy said, "I'll be careful." He took the box of detergent home.
About a week later the little boy came back to the store and the clerk recognized him and said, "Son, how's your dog?" And the little boy said, "I'm afraid he's dead."
And the store clerk says, "Oh, I'm sorry, but I did try to warn you that the Duz was pretty strong to wash your dog with."
The little boy shook his head and said, "I don't think it was the Duz that did it. I think it was the rinse cycle that got him."

Although today's POTD is much about being in the right place at the right time, it still required positioning to make the composition work. The eye is led to the gate and house and that area is set off-centre. This allows the strongly covered trees to be in the middle without the image looking too balanced.
Some people are like the ship captain who, the story goes, saw one night at sea what looked like the lights of another ship heading toward him. He had his signalman blink to the other ship: "Change your course 10 degrees south."
The reply came back: "Change your course 10 degrees north."
The captain answered "I am captain. Change your course south."
To which the reply was, "I am seaman first class. Change your course north."
This infuriated the captain, so he signaled back: "I am a battleship. Change course south."
The reply came back, "I am a lighthouse. Change course north.

A large DOF is very effective when the foreground subject is really small and close to the camera. Branny got down and close to the boulders to give them as much significance to the picture as the castle. The bank and waterline provide a converging diagonal that links the two. Whilst the sky is dark and moody, the bright section of the clouds make the main subject stand out.
Windy Beckham attended a wedding in Trent, Texas. He sat directly behind the groom's parents. As the bride and groom, both in their teens, repeated their vows, the young groom got to the part about "with all my worldly goods I thee endow...", his (the groom's) father leaned over to the groom's mother and said, "Well...there goes Junior's bicycle!"
