Here's an interesting essay from Luminous Landscapes that talks about composition and steps to make to save an image from what would be a rather dull image to something that has impact...  Food for thought...

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/excludes.shtml

That's something I seem to be grasping of late especially with my experience with the Canada Geese picture I posted a while back. I'll post a forum showing both before and after results I ended up with in the near future...

It is an interesting piece. I can't help thinking though that if his finished pic had appeared in the gallery here, someone (probably me) would have commented that the tree needs it's trunk to make the photo work or something else about the lower part of the image.

Have to agree David, cropping the dark area top of the pic works and improves the image, leaving the trunk and foreground.."grounds" the image. But what has been created is an image that would work well as a web graphic, or banner background perhaps.

I think that's a good point, Steve. I'm also conscious that the essay form gave quite a lot of explanation of the image which in most circumstances wouldn't have been available.

I often have sessions of looking back over photofiles, sometimes I even remeber the reason I took the shot in the first place. If it needs cropping I will do it, I have found this has saved an image especially for an AV show.
