I have to admit now this D300 is awesome. I'm glad that i have crossed over but lenses are harder to come by compared to canon. Canon seems a little cheaper but right now i'm in a war with what lenses to keep and upgrade to. I love Craigslist just bought a nikon 80-200 f2.8 lens and a nikon 35-70 f2.8 lens for 500.00. Great Glass but i may turn around and sell the 2 of them not sure. Any Ideas... yours trully David Camera

As you've probably found out by now, there's a good reason why Canon and Nikon lead the market race in DSLRs. What amazes me is to find someone who 'jumped sides'. Usually photographers get tied in to one maker.

There is nothing that would make me switch to Canon; not because I don't respect Canon (they are great) but simply because the cost would be prohibitive. If it had not been for the D70 jumping out at me from the camera shop's shelf, I might well be a Canon man myself because that's the route my brother-in-law went.

Swings and roundabouts with the lenses - some are better on one side and some the other
Kit lenses seem generally a bit better with Nikon and specialist lenses seem a little better from
Canon
of course the likes of Tamron, Sigma and Tokina are a real boon here

well i did well revamping my lenses. I now have 1. a Promaster 17-50 f2.8 lens which you will discover is actually a tamron and is a awesome lens. 2. 105mm nikon micro lens ( good prime)
3. 35-70 nikon f2.8 but will be selling tomorrow and will be getting the sigma 50-150 f2.8 II lens which will be my all in one lens. This lens is very fast and has APO glass and has good reviews. My final lens is the Tokina 80-400 ATX lens ( newer version).
I also have a nikon 24-85 AF-C lens which Ken Rockwell speaks highly about but when i get my sigma i will be selling it. The reason for the change in lenses its time to make money with this investment. My next step is to build a website to show case my photos ( I really like HDR) also its time to enter these contests here Smiley

I had just got my D70 and at the time it had a higher burst rate than the canon etc, which if memory serves me helped you make you decision on these very pages......

I know have the D300 and loving it.. I now need a suitable benefactor so I can have some nice glass, like the new version of the 70-200 F2.8 etc....

Brian and Jonathan Ryan were big factors in my decision, though I thought it was a better looking and better featured camera...
Interesting thing for me is, that in the Nikon D300 users group on Flickr they almost all said the Sigma 50mm F1.4 was sharper and a better lens than the Nikon....

Too bad nobody was around to get a video clip of that. 2funny

I have heard of people jumping from Nikon to Canon because of Nikon's refusal to repair what was in Nikon's opinion "gray market" equipment, even when the customer was willing to pay for the repair.

I still don't think the actual make is as important as making sure the camera suits you personally

Couldnt agree more!

Wherever you go there is this argument between "Canikons" and it makes me laugh, rarely you hear of an oly user jumping ship....

And using the E3, I dont need to run for cover when it starts raining either lol....

Perhaps it is because there are so few Oly users to jump. Cheesy  For me, I did seriously look at Oly (and Nikon and Konica/Minolta) before finally settling on Canon and very nearly went with Minolta.  In fact I placed the order for a used KM 5D (not to be confused with the Canon 5D) but it had been sold already.  I really wanted a 5D and couldn't justify the more available (and more expensive) 7D at the time, so I had to go with my second choice.

Despite my having eventually rejecting Olympus, the system nevertheless has its merits.  Although the four-thirds lens system doesn't have quite as much to choose from, what is there is capable of first-rate image quality.  The E-3 also has full weather sealing at a semi-affordable price and I also like the idea that four-thirds is open to third-party manufacturers in a way that Nikon and Canon mounts are not.  (I must also admit that one of the features that biased me initially in favor of Nikon was the fact that Fuji and Kodak also had bodies that could use Nikon lenses.  Kodak also had also sold a couple of models that used Canon lenses but those were out of production by the time I went dSLR shopping for real.)

Good point!  A good photographer is able to take a decent picture with a £50.00 camera, but put a £1000.00 camera in the hands of a bad photographer, and you will still get bad photographs.  What I like about this site is the dedication of the members, no matter which camera they use, to the art of "painting with light."

Thanks
When I started out in Digital I got an Olympus Ultra zoom
Then I wanted a wider angle and TBH a bit more resolution than the 3mp
my orig Oly gave me - so I got an 8mp Konika Minolta (bridge style)
Then I wanted to be able to interchange lenses and a faster response (like my film SLR days)
I deliberated - but my final choice was in the shop with handling a shortlist
of different cameras.
I am totally happy with my Nikon - but I am sure that if a Canon or an Olympus
had felt right I would be happy with one of either of them.
I know there are some areas where one is a bit better over another - but at the
end of the day - most of 'em are very good.

I am happy with my Olympus E-VOLT 500.  Someone else is happy with their Canon/Nikon/Minolta/Pentax/Sakakaki or whatever.  We all produce great pictures, as is proved in the Gallery day after day.  Let's all enjoy what we do (not forgetting that Olympus is the Rolls Royce, any other make is Mercedes and below   Grin

I agree, as I have the Olympus E520 with the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 Mk2. I suppose it's like driving the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé. Grin

I've been with Nikon since the F.    I've owned several (the old ones never fall apart) and I have lots of Nikkors.

But Pentax seems to be a much better value for the quality.   Why pay for advertising?    And my old Pentax lenses all work on my K20.

OK I went back to Canon. Wanted a full frame sensor and lenses i could afford. I have to admit though Nikon's D300 is one awesome camera. Maybe the best built crop camera ever. I even had to forfeit my Nikonians.org membership...BUT with that said Canon produces better color shots i believe especially for HDR
