And here is one from my Canon 40D, 1/40 sec @ f/2.8 @ ISO 1600.  The exposure was also boosted by 1/3 stop in the DPP RAW converter that comes with the camera, though I must confess that I lowered the in-camera sharpening from its default level of 4 down to 1.

Ok, so I figure I should probably go ahead and do the same thing.  Smiley  I love your dragon btw, very nifty looking.

This is from his eye.  Remember, it was at f2.8 so VERY shallow DOF and the focus sadly didn't fall on the moving dog's eye.  *sigh*  My camera is also set for absolutely no sharpening, and I have it set for no sharpening when converting from RAW as well.

Anyhoo...this is a 100% pixel crop.  I could have picked from the in focus area, but decided to go for his eyes even though they aren't.  It has a mix of lights and darks anyway, should be fine.  Smiley  Ok, actually I'm not sure it is 100% pixel crop as I had to dump it down to a resolution of 72 of course, but I took the pixel size it was before and made sure that it was the same pixel size after.

I hadn't even thought to do the pixel crop...I just was so excited and in love with the picture of my "firstborn" and the excuse to harass the Nikonians (all of the people that I stayed with in England were Nikonians and I love them dearly in spite of their obvious shortcomings).  2funny

Noise tends to be more noticeable in midtones and dark areas devoid of fine detail and texture, such as out-of-focus areas.  In my pixel crop, such areas would be the tabletop to the left of the dragon's head, the top of the organ console near the tissue box, the dragon's jowl and left ear, and the glass container holding the oranges.  To a lesser extent, noise also shows up in the dragon's snout and tongue as well.

In your image, mid-to-dark out-of-focus parts of the image such as the dog's right ear or the area in the lower left around your logo would be places where I would look for noise.  Then again, I also notice that so far none of the Nikon camp has yet put his money where his mouth is.  Evil

The whole picture looked like this honestly (well, not this out of focus), the worst noise level you'll find is the same as you've got in the "mascara" around his eye.

Then again, I also notice that so far none of the Nikon camp has yet put his money where his mouth is.  Evil

Oh, I'm sure they are just searching through their pictures trying to see if they can find ANY that have even one speck of noise anywhere.  I should seriously see if I can find one of my high ISO pictures from my 20D to compare with this...but I'm trying to stomp on Nikon right now.  Grin

Yes, but Brian, if you'd taken it using a Canon we'd be able to tell what it was!!!  Tongue

What was it Lance Armstrong said, "It's not about the bike!" I'm sure that applies equally here.

Which honestly bugs me a bit.  I'd love to see him try to do it with my bike, or my husband's bike.  My husband does nice long 100 mile rides and everything, but no matter how fast he is on his bike, it can't keep up with a bike like Lance's.  True, doing the 100 mile ride around Crater Lake, if they switched bikes Pete probably wouldn't be able to keep up with Lance, but put Lance on Pete's bike and he'd finish absolutely dead last in the Tour.  It is like that with cameras.  I told Pete that last night in fact before seeing this.  Smiley  I could have taken the exact same picture of Chaucer with my 20D, or heck...with a disposable camera (which was my only camera for a few years), and somewhere in the noise and darkness I'd know there was a beautiful picture of a dog...you just wouldn't be able to tell.  That is one of the reasons I'm so excited to have my new camera.  There is a girl in our church who has no chance of affording a new camera.  She has a p&s digital camera from about 5 years ago, and her talent is WAAAAY beyond what that camera can handle.  I'm letting her have my camera after she babysits a couple times (wahooo...date with Pete!!! Grin) so she has something she can actually use to get more creative with.  It IS about the photographer, you can't make a silk purse and all...it is just that if you have a good tool to work with you can do better work.  Smiley

Maybe your husband doesn't get such high grade drugs

I'm sure I didn't even think that!

That's why I chose Canon if truth be told. I picked them all up and the Canon just felt best. As simple as that.
 Smiley

Chris speaks sense! Thumb Up (she often does you know)

I have just trawled through this thread and I know most of you guys are really just having
a bit of fun at the 'other Brands' expense. Grin
To be fair most Companies make good cameras, some are better than others
and if you plump for a DSLR - it's as much about if it suits you and you are comfortable
with it as wanything else.
In the final analysis my choice was down to holding a few different cams in my hand
and looking through the view finder and just getting the feel of the thing.

Having said all that - some do have certain advantages over others and you have to decide
which of those are more important to you.
If it's low light and noise - it does seem Canon and Nikon are doing particularly well at
the moment as seen above...
For every brand, I'm sure, someone can say something good about them and sing
there praises.

I have a Nikon - I am not proud or ashamed - I am just happy with it, it fits my hands
nicely. Thumb Up
I fancied a Canon when I was buying and I don't doubt if I had got one I would have
settled into it - but the Nikon worked better in my hands at the time.
I also like the Olympus images - the lenses are superb and colours etc look great
- they don't shine quite so well in low light and high ISO
I also liked some of the new Pentax models - I could go on and on....
I have heard of people who have decided to move over to an alternative brand -
it is a brave move if you have invested in lenses already.
Way back in my Film days - I got into Tamron's adaptall system - I had the idea that if I
changed camera brand I could just buy the appropriate adaptor - I don't think they do
that sort of thing anymore - but that would be a great idea to resurect!!

Cheesy
Define better!   Wink

OK - so side by side those lovely White Pro Canon Lenses are better
than certain other lenses.
The trouble is, and I think this is intentional, there rarely seems to be
a model from Nikon and Canon that are direct rivals - always seems
they are staggered so there isn't quite a direct comparison...

And vive la différence I say. There is something to suit almost anyone who isn't greedy for perfection at a budget price.
