COFFEE COUNTER
for week of
June 21st

Today In History

June 21, 1964,Civil rights workers disappear

In Neshoba County in central Mississippi, three civil rights field workers disappear after investigating the burning of an African American church by the Ku Klux Klan. Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman, both white New Yorkers, had traveled to heavily segregated Mississippi in 1964 to help organize civil rights efforts on behalf of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). The third man, James Chaney, was a local African American man who had joined CORE in 1963. The disappearance of the three young men garnered national attention and led to a massive FBI investigation that was code-named MIBURN, for "Mississippi Burning."

Today's Trivia

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park, one of the first wilderness parks in the United States, is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more.

More About Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park possesses outstanding recreational values and supreme scenic attractions, including alpine and subalpine wilderness, three groves of giant sequoia trees and thundering waterfalls that are among the world's highest. Yosemite was the birthplace of the idea of the Sierra Club and plays an important role in wildlife preservation and preserving biological diversity.

From the Judges:

"The judges are delighted to award another Café Choice award to Oy for his oh so effective Liverpool Cathedral Steps. One judge commented 'the angle of view is excellent and you can see he has put a lot of thought into the composition here too, my eye feels comfortable roaming the shot'.

The use of mono, the lines, the shading, the use of available light are all faultless. Simplicity rules it would appear.

Today's Chuckles

Balance

I'm not saying that the customer service in my bank is bad, but I went in the other day and asked the clerk to check my balance. She leaned over and pushed me.

I'm Shrinking!

A man rushed into the doctor's office and shouted, "Doctor! Doctor! I think I'm shrinking!!"
The doctor calmly responded, "Now, settle down. You'll just have to be a little patient."

More Chuckles

A New Kind of Car

Two guys sat down for lunch in the office cafeteria. "Hey, whatever happened to Pete in payroll?" one asked. "He got this hare brained notion he was going to build a new kind of car," his coworker replied. "How was he going to do it?" "He took an engine from a Pontiac, tires from a Chevy, seats from a Lincoln, hubcaps from a Caddy and well, you get the idea." "So what did he end up with?" "Ten years to life."

Friendship Quotes

"True friendship is like sound health; the value of it is seldom known until it be lost."

Charles Caleb Colton

"Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born."
Anais Nin

The wide-angle was definitely needed for today's POTD. The partial framing of the spire adds to the sense of height of the building. The glorious clouds seem to fan out, giving a depth to the picture.

The final 5:
You might be a redneck if...
...you have sunglasses that are mirrored on the inside.
...your think BMW are the call letters for a radio station.
...you own a belt buckle that weighs more than 3 pounds.
...you have any relatives named Elmer or Jed.
...you've ever been to a funeral where there were more pickup trucks than cars.

Morning all

What a huge selection of mugs you've got Geoff!
Hot and sunny in London - but wait - it's Wimbledon week, so it's bound to rain any time soon.

Hope it is nice for Wimbledon - Jack is playing in 2 bands - usually as people are
coming in and we have tickets for the Friday next week.
Bit jittery about getting my photos right - if it IS bright- then they are very saturated and contrasty
and hard to nail the exposure.
Mugs - well - I guess we need lots as we use a dishwasher
Todays mug is the 'Morris Minor' - a regular favourite of mine..

here it is (again) with another firm favourite - I think we got the other
one in Wittards.

Can I have a stiff drink out of one of your mugs Geoff? I've just witnessed a murder. Magpie pecking a starling to death in my garden.  The crow family really are vicious creatures, and we've got quite a few in my area.

Where we were staying last week (in the Isle of Wight) the landowner had put up an owl box. The crows got the chicks so the box is abandoned now.

Even if Brian's POTD didn't have the technical quality, it would probably have still won because there is a cuteness in that face that you can't resist. Draw an imaginary line up through the middle of the body and head and you will find it runs diagonally from corner to corner.

The little girl was walking in the garden.  She happened to see a peacock, a bird she had never seen before.
After gazing in silent admiration, she ran into the house and cried out, "Oh, Granny, come and see.  One of your chickens is in bloom!"
