COFFEE COUNTER
for week of
June 7th

Today In History

June 7th ..1942: Japan defeated at Midway

The Battle of Midway ends as the United States reverses the tide against the previously invincible Japanese navy. A thousand miles northwest of Honolulu, the strategic island of Midway became a target for Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto’s Japanese fleet. As with Pearl Harbor, Yamamoto planned a surprise assault, but this time U.S. naval intelligence had decoded Japanese messages and the United States was prepared for the attack. An outnumbered squadron of American fighters repulsed a large force of Japanese aircraft attacking Midway, and two U.S. attack fleets surprised the Japanese fleet, destroying all four of Yamamoto’s aircraft carriers and thus signalling the beginning of the end of Japanese hegemony in the Pacific.

Today's Trivia

A Royal Visit

King George VI becomes the first British monarch to visit the United States when he and his wife, Elizabeth, cross the Canadian-U.S. border to Niagara Falls, New York on this day in 1939. The royal couple subsequently visited New York City and Washington, D.C., where they called for a greater U.S. role in resolving the crisis in Europe. On June 12, they returned to Canada, where they embarked on their voyage home.

Betamax

Today is Betamax Day, marking Sony’s introduction of the first videocassette recorder on this date in 1975. It sold for $995 and eventually disappeared as consumers preferred VHS-format VCRs, introduced later.

From the Judges:

"The judges are delighted to award another Café Choice award to Oy for his oh so effective Liverpool Cathedral Steps. One judge commented 'the angle of view is excellent and you can see he has put a lot of thought into the composition here too, my eye feels comfortable roaming the shot'.

The use of mono, the lines, the shading, the use of available light are all faultless. Simplicity rules it would appear.

Congrats Oy!" from the Judges.

Today's Chuckles

Great Cheese

The customer in the Italian restaurant was so pleased with his meal that he asked to speak to the chef. The owner proudly led him into the kitchen and introduced him to the chef. "Your veal parmigiana was superb," the customer said. "I just spent a month in Italy, and yours is better than any I ever had over there." "Naturally," the chef said. "Over there, they use domestic cheese. Ours is imported!"

Hair Cut

Boss: You got your hair cut on company time.

Susie: It grew on company time.

Boss: Not all that hair.

Susie: I didn't get it all cut.

More Chuckles

Miracle House

My engineer husband is meticulous but mild-mannered. While our new house was being built, he would leave notes for the workmen, politely calling their attention to mistakes or oversights. Two weeks before we were to move in, the floors still were not finished, the bathrooms not tiled, nor were necessary fixtures installed. I was sure that the work would never be completed in time. However, on moving day, we found that the house was ready to receive us.

Curious as to how this miracle had been accomplished, I went and checked where my husband always left his notes for the workmen. Posted prominently on the living room wall was my husband's last note: "after September 15, all work will be supervised by 5 children."

You got sun up there, Karen? Lucky you. The weather down here's looking a bit Scottish!

I don't know that I could manage a whole fry up but bacon and fried egg in a sarnie would be just the job with a black coffee.

Lovely PotD from BevB. Wish we had more of these cute little creatures and less of the grey ones.

See you later.

David

Hiyall!

What a lovely POTD from Bev. I've never seen a red squirrel for real.

Just come back from an art exhibition at the Royal Academy in London and it was really interesting. Some of the pics look so simple though, you feel that you could do it. I did used to dabble in drawing and painting, so I might get my gear out later and have another go.  There were a few photographs in the exhibition too, but to be quite honest, I think some of our Cafe members could have done just as well. I bet they wouldn't demand £3,500 a throw though!!!!

Time for a cuppa and currant bun I think. All this culture is wearing me out.

BigAl will not be in today; but, if he was, I'm sure he would say that Bev's POTD is just super!  I know that I think it is and the little eyes on that little fellow look like they are looking right at my eyes!  What a wonderful title too, Bev!

Hi All

Coo, there's a sight for sore eyes on this dull and wet morning. Nice one David!! Thumb Up

Off for my daily walk soon, then a visit to parents. Then I've got to sort out loads of old filters and bits and pieces to put on Ebay. I'm doing quite well there selling my old manual lenses and photo stuff. Better than expected. And I'm finally managing to empty some drawers!!  Must start on the bags and shoes next - that's give me tons more space in my spare room.

A lemon juice and plain yoghurt with seeds please Cafe.

Although I'm not a fan of 'weighted' images, (where the brightness is all one side,) I can appreciate the impact of this imbalance in today's POTD. Notice how detail is retained even in the darkest areas. Focus is maintained from the closest grain of sand to the horizon.

Dumblander: Someone from Dumbland – a fictitious country full of idiots. You can substitute the real country of your choice.

An American, a Frenchman, and a Dumblander were running through the woods in search of a place to hide from a firing squad in hot pursuit.  As they were moving through the forest they heard sounds of the approaching search party and the decided to take to the trees to hide.
The American climbed up a tree and the Frenchman and the Dumblander kept on going.
A little farther down the road the Frenchman climbed up a tree and the Dumblander went on.
A little farther down the road the Dumblander climbed up a tree.
As the search party walked under the American's tree, a branch snapped and fell to the ground.  In desperation, the American started whistling like a bird.  The search party decided that it was just that, a bird, so they went on.
As the party moved under the tree where the Frenchman was hiding he also accidentally made a telltale noise.  As the search party looked around the Frenchman went "Whooo...whooo...".  The search party believed it to be an owl, and again moved on.
As the party approached the Dumblander’s tree they suddenly heard a strange loud noise emanating from the branches "Moo...Moo..."

Lovely image for POTD - nicely presented.
Grey generally here today - typical for one of my off days!
So - I am going to do some stuff at home - maybe pop out
with the pushbike for a short while (try out the ankle).
Helped myself to some fresh coffee...

Good afternoon everyone and first off, thanks to all for votes and comments on all my pics. You're a great bunch and your support is much appreciated.

It's a bit grey today but not the rain has stopped. I think it'll be the healthy option for me today, Karen, a cup of black coffee and a scone, jam and clotted cream. That is healthy isn't it? I'm sure it'll do me good!

See you later.

She didn't.  It's a link to another site.  With a suitable smiley font, I could probably put something like that together in a half an hour or so.
