Today In History
The Battle of Midway ends as the United States reverses the tide against the previously invincible Japanese navy. A thousand miles northwest of Honolulu, the strategic island of Midway became a target for Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto’s Japanese fleet. As with Pearl Harbor, Yamamoto planned a surprise assault, but this time U.S. naval intelligence had decoded Japanese messages and the United States was prepared for the attack. An outnumbered squadron of American fighters repulsed a large force of Japanese aircraft attacking Midway, and two U.S. attack fleets surprised the Japanese fleet, destroying all four of Yamamoto’s aircraft carriers and thus signalling the beginning of the end of Japanese hegemony in the Pacific. more~Quote Of The Day "There is joy in work. There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something. "

Today's Trivia A Royal VisitKing George VI becomes the first British monarch to visit the United States when he and his wife, Elizabeth, cross the Canadian-U.S. border to Niagara Falls, New York on this day in 1939. The royal couple subsequently visited New York City and Washington, D.C., where they called for a greater U.S. role in resolving the crisis in Europe. On June 12, they returned to Canada, where they embarked on their voyage home. BetamaxToday is Betamax Day, marking Sony’s introduction of the first videocassette recorder on this date in 1975. While our new house was being built, he would leave notes for the workmen, politely calling their attention to mistakes or oversights. Two weeks before we were to move in, the floors still were not finished, the bathrooms not tiled, nor were necessary fixtures installed. I was sure that the work would never be completed in time. However, on moving day, we found that the house was ready to receive us. Curious as to how this miracle had been accomplished, I went and checked where my husband always left his notes for the workmen. Posted prominently on the living room wall was my husband's last note: "after September 15, all work will be supervised by 5 children." A VERY BIG WELCOME TO ALL OUR NEW MEMBERS

You got sun up there, Karen? Lucky you. The weather down here's looking a bit Scottish!
I don't know that I could manage a whole fry up but bacon and fried egg in a sarnie would be just the job with a black coffee.
Lovely PotD from BevB. Wish we had more of these cute little creatures and less of the grey ones.
See you later.

Hiyall!
What a lovely POTD from Bev. I've never seen a red squirrel for real.
Just come back from an art exhibition at the Royal Academy in London and it was really interesting. Some of the pics look so simple though, you feel that you could do it. I did used to dabble in drawing and painting, so I might get my gear out later and have another go. There were a few photographs in the exhibition too, but to be quite honest, I think some of our Cafe members could have done just as well. I bet they wouldn't demand £3,500 a throw though!!!!
Time for a cuppa and currant bun I think. All this culture is wearing me out.

BigAl will not be in today; but, if he was, I'm sure he would say that Bev's POTD is just super! I know that I think it is and the little eyes on that little fellow look like they are looking right at my eyes! What a wonderful title too, Bev!

Hi All
Coo, there's a sight for sore eyes on this dull and wet morning. Nice one David!!
Off for my daily walk soon, then a visit to parents. Then I've got to sort out loads of old filters and bits and pieces to put on Ebay. I'm doing quite well there selling my old manual lenses and photo stuff. Better than expected. And I'm finally managing to empty some drawers!! Must start on the bags and shoes next - that's give me tons more space in my spare room.
A lemon juice and plain yoghurt with seeds please Cafe.

Although I'm not a fan of 'weighted' images, (where the brightness is all one side,) I can appreciate the impact of this imbalance in today's POTD. Notice how detail is retained even in the darkest areas. Focus is maintained from the closest grain of sand to the horizon.
Dumblander: Someone from Dumbland – a fictitious country full of idiots. You can substitute the real country of your choice.
An American, a Frenchman, and a Dumblander were running through the woods in search of a place to hide from a firing squad in hot pursuit. As they were moving through the forest they heard sounds of the approaching search party and the decided to take to the trees to hide. The American climbed up a tree and the Frenchman and the Dumblander kept on going. A little farther down the road the Frenchman climbed up a tree and the Dumblander went on. A little farther down the road the Dumblander climbed up a tree. As the search party walked under the American's tree, a branch snapped and fell to the ground. In desperation, the American started whistling like a bird. The search party decided that it was just that, a bird, so they went on. As the party moved under the tree where the Frenchman was hiding he also accidentally made a telltale noise. As the search party looked around the Frenchman went "Whooo...whooo...". The search party believed it to be an owl, and again moved on. As the party approached the Dumblander’s tree they suddenly heard a strange loud noise emanating from the branches "Moo...Moo..."

Lovely image for POTD - nicely presented. Grey generally here today - typical for one of my off days! So - I am going to do some stuff at home - maybe pop out with the pushbike for a short while (try out the ankle). Helped myself to some fresh coffee...

Good afternoon everyone and first off, thanks to all for votes and comments on all my pics. You're a great bunch and your support is much appreciated.
It's a bit grey today but not the rain has stopped. I think it'll be the healthy option for me today, Karen, a cup of black coffee and a scone, jam and clotted cream. That is healthy isn't it? I'm sure it'll do me good!
See you later.

She didn't. It's a link to another site. With a suitable smiley font, I could probably put something like that together in a half an hour or so.

Good morning everyone
I'm wondering this morning. Wondering why I took any notice of the BBC weather prediction, wondering why I got out of bed at 5 o'clock and why, when I looked out of the window, I didn't just get back in bed
Oh well, It was quite nice being up on a misty morning, dodging the rain and having the beach (mostly) to myself. Who knows there may be a haunting atmospheric shot in among the glurk.
Happy birthday Pat!

Congratulations to Mioram for a beautiful PotD

I make it well known that I am not into flower pictures (it's just me) but I had to appreciate the use of a nice border of Mioram's POTD. It is a sharp image with good exposure to keep the lovely tones in the rose.

This reminds me of the debate on how to pronounce the word "SCONE."
Apparently, when it is still on the plate, then it's "scoan." But, when you've eaten it, it's "sconn."

Ron's POTD is a nice example of keeping it clean and simple. The subject is both the lighthouse and the leading stones and there are no strong distractions from them. Notice how the horizon is one-third up from the bottom and the lighthouse is one-third in from the left. This use of the Thirds makes for the ideal composition. Finally, look at that sky - it has a great range of brightness from small patches of pure white to mid-greys which form radiating lines that give a sense of depth to the image.
You might be a redneck if... ...someone asks to see your ID and you show them your belt buckle. ...the primary color of your car is Bondo. ...directions to your house include "Turn off the paved road." ...your dog and your wallet are both on a chain.

Good morning everyone.
A great PotD today from RonP. Excellent for all the reasons Al's mentioned above. Lining up the lighthouse like that is one part and getting the weather' with you is the second part. The last bit is getting the camera and processing right and bringing it all together. Well done, Ron!
Strawberries and cream, that's a treat, Karen. Do you mind if I have some muesli with mine for breakfast with a nice cup of tea? It's a lovely day here after a real downpour yesterday afternoon and evening.
Have a great day and see you all later.

Thanks for the votes and kind comments folks, I really appreciate them, this is why feed back is so important to me and helps me to improve my image's, after reading Al's comment's I am well chuffed, "Thank's Al" Keep up the good work folks, I always look in and are waiting for Karen to put a good recipe on for Short Bread biscuits, make my own twice a week, but they are no patch on the Scottish version, used to spend a lot of time at one of my old companies premises on the outskirts of Glasgow and one of the secretaries Margaret Milligan used to make the most delicious shortbreads, melt in the mouth version. Have a good day, off to cut the fir tree's. Ron

TRY THIS RON.......... 455 g unsalted butter 625 g all-purpose flour 200 g white sugar DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Cream butter and sugar with mixer. Add flour and mix with a wooden spoon. Use hands to thoroughly mix. Press into a jelly roll pan. Prick to bottom all over with a fork being sure the fork hits the bottom and the pricks are close together. Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to 300 and continue to bake for 40 minutes more. Wait 2 minutes then cut into finger size bars. Cool thoroughly in pan.

This reminds me of the debate on how to pronounce the word "SCONE."
Apparently, when it is still on the plate, then it's "scoan." But, when you've eaten it, it's "sconn."
A day or two later, it will then be called fat.

Hi Karen Thanks for the recipe, I will give it a try at the weekend when I do my next batch, only made some yesterday, when you say all purpose flour do you mean Plain Flour or Self Raising. currently I use a mixture of 8oz plain flour and 4oz Corn flour. Thanks Ron P.S Next thing to put on the cafe menu is some Scottish Toast.

Once again the style of the POTD is simplicity. This time the subject is not on the Thirds because it demands to be central. Why? Because, like bridges and piers, it is symmetrical. The point at which the lens was focussed, and the DOF used, have left the fine 'hairs' pin-sharp whilst leaving just a hint of the stem for context.
You might be a redneck if... ...you own more cowboy boots than sneakers. ...you've ever worn a cowboy hat to church. ...you have a picture of Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash over the fireplace. ...you still have an 8-track tape player in your car.

I'm having my second cup of coffee.
Then I'm driving to London. I have to be at the hospital at 2 pm so I'm going to leave here about 11 am. I've got about 1 3/4 hr. before I pull out.

I found y'all and even got in, been a very long time! Love the dancers, Pat... not sure the connection to, but St.Louis/East St.Louis was always full of music (name at the end of video). I grew up in Sedalia, MO, 200 miles away, where Scott Joplin lived & created. Had a grand tour of the music joints in St.Louis when a good friend's cousins that live there, took us. The music during intermission was what New Orleans was noted for, pure jazz, not what you danced to!
Hello, Jeanne... don't see many names I recognize. Love the Anniversary photo, Pat... and Congratulations! ... Tisie/Shirley

Jeanne, I'll enjoy eating anything I don't have to bake, and your offering sounds good to me! I baked jalapeno cornbread to go with home made veggie/beef soup for lunch. I put about half a can of green chilies & half a can of chopped jalapenos, along with an ear of corn cooked & cut off the cob & the rest of the recipe on the box of Martha White's mix (half the mix). I bake like other southern cornbread, in a very hot cast iron skillet (dancing oil) & bake in the oven. Got the recipe from Ruth Ann in Nashville. Yummmmy! I visited the "How to"... but didn't see any answer to my problem. I was wanting to "click for larger" on the photos I just posted but didn't know how to do it in here. I have the code from Pat for the other site but I use PhotoBucket with it. Do I upload the larger as well as smaller the same in here? I always enjoy the larger files when viewing and appreciate everyone's extra work to make it possible. EDIT: Scratch that question.... I just tried the click for larger on my photo and by golly, it works automatically! Now that's really uptown, folks!

Just so you girlies know, Kathy was a dear dear friend of the Photography Cafe, amongst other things an Administrator on here too, the coffee counter was her idea and she ran it every day, sadly Kathy became ill and after her passing we renamed the Coffee Counter to Kathy's Coffee Counter in memory of such a loving, special and wonderful woman. Friend to all she met. Karen(klc) has taken on Kathy's Coffee counter and is doing an amazing job at it Karen even makes us shortbread Hope that clears things up a bit Jenny

Jenny, thanks for that explanation. I think I did know at one time, but as the white hair keeps falling out of my head, so apparently do my brains! I used to be a regular here but dropped out for a while - and fortunately, Pat has lured me back.

Jeanne, you never know what feast you're going to enjoy in here with our Karen supplying it to us. We get the best Scottish fare! I'm sorry but I'm back from London a bit early but it was not a good trip. But as I've told Jenny, it was also a wonderful trip to see that school honour my cousin in the way that they did. I'm afraid I won't see my cousin again.

Before I lose y'all.... thanks (I think) for posting that question in the proper place.... & I bookmarked to find my way back. Thanks for the explaination of the name, and would you two quit bouncing me around for now??? Pat, I just talked to Janet, she's worn to a nub & was going to eat and rest tonight. I suggested she get a mouse with that new laptop & it won't seem such a stranger..... and she'll call over the week end when she's in the hospital where she can use their free wi-fi instead of the card she bought... and if we can't work it out with me on my computer & her on hers... I will pack mine up & go see her. She had a call from Larry Hanna & he also suggested getting a mouse. Her daughter wasn't doing well tonight so it's depressing when they all are so exhausted already. I think she said Darrel is going home tomorrow. Hope they didn't have damage from the large hail that was north of the town they live in... she said they live on the south end. That hail was baseball to golfball size so did some damage to crops, I'm sure. She did get into the photography site (I think she means this one?).... could read the posts but it wouldn't let her have the reply box. She needs someone to see why she can't login. She also hasn't been able to get her e-mail and I can't help her with that because I use Yahoo that can be picked up anywere on any computer. If we can't work that out I will talk her into getting a Yahoo account because I can deal with that one better than G-mail or Hotmail (have both). I am sorry about your sad news with your cousin, Pat,... Must have been an emotional day for you.

Just so everyone realizes I'm not a "photographer"... I'm a point and shoot "picture taker". And believe me, there's a difference! hehe me too! welcome To me, the difference between a casual photographer and a beginning photographer isn't one of experience or expertise but of attitude. The casual photographer is interested in photography as mainly as a means of recording and documenting people and events but is not really interested in photography as a hobby. The beginning photographer is more interested in photography for its own sake. This doesn't imply any more skill or better results than the casual photographer, at least at first; but the beginner is more likely to improve eventually.

Many of you know what I've been going through since my cousin's daughter was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor on Mar. 25/09. She's 18 and now the school and all of her teachers planned the graduation ceremony in the hospital today. They had a programme and all students were in their caps and gowns and there was one just for Rachael as well. She received several special awards and was very highly thought of by her teachers and principal and vice principals. There were no dry eyes today. Just thought I'd post this class photo from my sad journey to London today. Those kids really love Rachael as they surround her bedside. I will be uploading many photos that I took into Rachael's website at: Rachael's Journey

Pat, nice seeing that picture, I'm sure it really meant a lot to her family to have them do that for her. I hope she enjoyed it too.

Keep the URL, Geoff. I think I'll go to bed now as it's 2:15 am and it's been such a traumatic day but I have about another 100 to put up. This was a day like I've never experienced before. What a wonderful school and principal, vice principals, teachers, students and all.
Off to bed now but I'll try to get more uploaded asap. Have a wedding to attend tomorrow.

We are not used to landscapes from Sara; but when she finally comes up with one it storms into the POTD slot. Again the strength of the picture is in the clean simplicity. There is little more than the three subjects - one in the foreground, one in the midground and the paired hills in the background - with a DOF that covers them all. The reflection of the tip of the tree trunk is the 'icing on the cake'.
You might be a redneck if... ...you have sunglasses that are mirrored on the inside. ...your think BMW are the call letters for a radio station. ...you own a belt buckle that weighs more than 3 pounds. ...you've ever been to a funeral where there were more pickup trucks than cars.
This is BigAl signing out for a week without internet access. But, don't worry, there are people on this site who will be filling in for my activities and keeping this site a fun place to visit.
